Seasons of love

Seasons of Love is on my playlist of feel-good songs and it brings me a smile whenever I hear it. It’s a bit nostalgic too. When Justin was in concert choir at NPHS they performed it as part of their repertoire and I delight in thinking back on that special season of my life - when the boys were in high school and the house was noisy and filled with the excitement and joy that come with raising kids. I miss those years and I miss our moms who were such an important part of our lives.

The lyrics in Seasons of Love point us to the number of minutes we have in any given year (525,600 to be exact) and they prompt us to reflect on how we’re spending those minutes. Ultimately we’re encouraged to “measure our lives in love,” which is the perfect lens for us as people of faith.

As I reflect on how I’m spending my 525,600 minutes, I pray that I’m pleasing God along the way…

  • Do I spend my time in loving service to others, being the saint next door?

  • Do I make Christ known to everyone I encounter, whether in word or in deed?

  • Do I accompany people on their journey and love them without judgment?

  • Do I waste time dwelling on hurts or do I forgive people readily and move on?

  • Do I spend time in prayer, trusting that God’s grace is sufficient?

  • Do I put Jesus in the driver’s seat, hand over the keys and let him drive? (I’m working on it!)

Each moment is a precious gift that can never be repeated. Each hour with our loved ones is a treasure we must never take for granted. Each day brings fresh opportunities to love God and others, which is the ultimate purpose of our lives.

I hope Seasons of Love brings you a smile and may it remind us of the utter importance of making every moment count, so that when we look back on the seasons of our lives, we will “remember the love…[which] is a gift from above, and measure our lives in love.”
