I love my grandson because…
I’d like to introduce you to someone special, my little grandson Mason. He’s four months old and he’s one of the jewels in my grandma crown. His big bro Weston is four years old and we have a third bundle of joy coming in September. I’m so blessed! I love being a grandma - it truly is grand! These kids melt my heart. When I’m with them, I forget all the problems of the world.
Being a wife and mom has been the greatest joy of my life, but being a grandma is double joy. You get to love them and spoil them and give them back for all the heavy lifting. Raising kids is not for the faint of heart! The days are long and the nights can be sleepless, but I want to encourage all the young parents out there, the journey is so worth it! Nothing compares to seeing your kids grow up to be good human beings with loving hearts and caring spirits. You won’t see the fruits of your labor for 20 years, but trust me, your daily sacrifices will not be in vain. And keep Christ at the center of everything you do. He loves your kids more than you do.
Bill and I were away for our anniversary in June, and we met a couple with two young sons. They asked how our kids had turned out and how we’d survived the parenting years. I told them it had been a great joy for us and two things stood out: give your kids unconditional love and undivided attention and they’ll turn out great.
Why do we love our kids and grandkids so much? Well, because they exist, which is how God loves us - simply because we exist. We’re his sons and daughters and nothing will ever change that. We can run away from God (and sometimes we get very far away), but he’s always there to welcome us back with open arms and a heart of mercy.
Our lives are such a mysterious gift. Each one of us is so unique, endowed with a distinct set of talents that only we can offer this world. And we’re made in the image of God, which makes each life of inestimable worth. This reflection from Magnificat sums it up nicely, “The greatest treasure God puts on this earth is a human being: loved into existence by Almighty God, graced by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and destined for eternity.” Let’s all marinate in the gift of our shared humanity and the gift of our kids and grandkids. It’s a blessing we must never take for granted.
